What is masters swimming?
Masters swimming is an organized group sport for adults 18 years of age and older. Swimmers train together under the auspices of a coach and measure their progress by participating in friendly competitions. Lots of masters swimmers were competitive swimmers growing up — but that doesn’t mean you have to be a masterful swimmer to be a masters swimmer. Masters clubs also give adult swimmers who are new to competitive swimming an opportunity to be coached by individuals experienced and accomplished in the sport. On the fitness end, masters swim clubs are a place for adult athletes of any age to pursue the benefits of an active lifestyle. On the competitive end, masters is like age group swimming for adults. Swimmers compete in 5-year age categories – women 25-29, men 30-34, for example – from the local all the way to the international level. You may not think you want to compete, but as anyone who has ever attended a masters swim meet will attest, racing is challenging, exhilerating, and fun!
Are you a masters swimmer?
You are a masters swimmer if you
- are 18 years of age or older
- want to participate in swimming as a group sport
- have a competitive swimming background
OR
- know the basics of all 4 competitive strokes
- can understand and follow competitive swimming-style workout sets
- have great lane etiquette
- know how to read the pace clock
Not a masters swimmer?
There are lots of activities out there for people who like to swim, including swimming lessons, open water swimming groups, triathlon clubs, synchro clubs, lifeguard training and competition, water polo…even underwater hockey! Keep exploring and you will find your fit. Good luck!
MSABC
Legacy Masters Swim Club is affiliated with the Masters Swimming Association of British Columbia (MSABC). All swimmers pay an annual registration fee of $90, which is mandatory for insurance purposes. MSABC membership allows swimmers to participate in masters swim meets and other masters swimming events worldwide.
