Advanced
You have a competitive swimming background. You speak the language and you can follow a workout without requiring a great deal of direction. Unless you are nursing an injury, you swim all four strokes. The average mileage per workout at this level is between 2,600-3,000 metres in one hour. This doesn’t mean that if you swim non-stop for one hour, you can complete 3,000 metres of freestyle. In fact, almost all the swimmers in this group will complete a 3km timed swim in under 45 minutes.
Intermediate
You don’t have a swim club background, but you are a strong swimmer. Perhaps you’re a dedicated lap swimmer who wants a more challenging workout. Maybe you were on your highschool swim team. Apart from having great lane etiquette, you also know something about interval training and how to read the pace clock. You may not have mastered all four strokes yet, but you’ve got the fundamentals, and you are athletic, game to learn, and motivated to improve.
DID YOU KNOW?
Not all masters swim clubs are the same. Some clubs cater exclusively to swimmers who want to improve their freestyle for triathlon. Others welcome folks who just want to get together and swim. There are even hybrid programs for those who aren’t necessarily interested in competitive swimming, but still want to incorporate swimming into their fitness routine. A small number of masters swim clubs offer swimming lessons. Legacy Masters aims to give swimmers 18 years and older the opportunity to keep enjoying the sport they love, even as they age.
